It's Crazy How Everyone Seems to Have Forgotten About Donald Trump's Steep Mental Decline Since He Was Re-Elected
In what horrifyingly turned out not to be the worst day of the year for Democrats, on June 27th, 2024, Donald Trump destroyed President Joe Biden in a CNN debate moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
As our culture’s preeminent bully, Trump, the Nelson Muntz of American politics, saw weakness and vulnerability in Biden and pounced.
Biden’s mental decline became impossible to ignore. Even Biden’s supporters and allies had to concede that Biden was, in many ways, just as fuzzy, foggy, and doddering as Republicans had accused him of being.
In a related development, on July 21st, less than a month after his disastrous debate performance, Biden dropped out of the race and threw his support behind Vice President Harris, who took over for him as the Democratic presidential nominee.
Trump only seemed sharp, young, and vigorous when debating a man who was only slightly older and only slightly more coherent.
In the only presidential debate between Trump and Kamala Harris, the twice-impeached convicted felon appeared fuzzy, foggy, and doddering.
It was a confused, abysmal performance where Trump ranted nonsensically about how Haitians were eating the dogs and eating cats and eating the pets and accused Harris, a gun owner, of trying to take away everybody’s guns.
Harris put on a masterclass in how to handle a bully. She treated him like a child throwing a tantrum. She refused to play Trump’s childish games and denied him the attention he desperately craved and angrily demanded.
The Vice President is nearly two decades younger than Trump but seems younger and more vigorous than her sixty years.
Trump ran an abysmal campaign against Harris. The thirty-four-time felon chose J.D. Vance, a deeply unlikable choad who seems to hate women almost as much as Trump does, as his Vice Presidential nominee, a move that seemed to please no one.
With Biden out of the picture, Trump’s steep mental decline became impossible to ignore or deny.
At a campaign event with noted puppy-murderer Kristi Noem, Trump pulled an audible and decided that, instead of taking questions from the chuckleheads in the audience, he’d DJ the world’s most depressing dance party and lurch about awkwardly while his cultists looked on in horror and mortification.
A media that underestimated Trump in 2016 and 2020 decided to over-correct by “sanewashing” the ex-president. Instead of treating clear-cut expressions of mental illness and senility as clear-cut expressions of mental illness and senility, a media Trump derides as the enemy of the American people went soft on the ex-president.
They provided fawning coverage for cynical stunts like Trump pretending to work the drive-thru at McDonald’s for twenty minutes as a way of trolling Kamala Harris for having once worked at the popular chain restaurant and Trump’s people staging a photo op in a garbage truck in response to Biden calling his supporters garbage.
Trump has continually referred to Biden’s supporters as sick, deranged, insane, sub-human, America-hating monsters and far-left lunatics who are somehow simultaneously fascists and communists with no negative consequences whatsoever, but if Biden or Hillary Clinton criticize the MAGA movement, they’re derided as out-of-touch elitists who lack Trump’s deep spiritual connection to the working men and women who make America great.
When Trump was re-elected, something strange and horrifyingly predictable happened.
The press and public instantly forgot about the many horrifying illustrations of Trump’s crumbling mental state. They treated him as the comeback kid, a wily survivor whose bond with American voters the media did not understand but must respect.
It’s as if winning the election made Trump twenty years younger and ten times as sharp and coherent in the public mind.
Trump does everything wrong in a way that somehow only helps him politically. He nominated a cabinet filled with traitors, suspected sex criminals, mentally ill conspiracy theorists, and a man whose enthusiasm for paying teenagers for sexed-up weekends doing Molly and coke and having orgies would lead him to remove himself for consideration for the role of attorney general.
The press and public were so distracted by the freak show that Trump had assembled, as well as his high-profile bromance with Elon Musk, that they stopped paying attention to Trump’s diminished mindstate and treated him like he was a president like any other.
For better or worse, there is a playbook for presidents who are no longer in full control of their faculties.
According to Ron Reagan, his father’s Alzheimer’s began while he was still in office. The Republicans tried to hide Reagan’s decline the same way that Democrats did during Biden’s time in office.
The Republicans will undoubtedly follow suit with Trump. J.D. Vance will undoubtedly help fill the power vacuum opened by Trump’s crumbling state, as will unofficial co-president Elon Musk.
I can only imagine how lost Trump, a seventy-eight-year-old man who consumes only fast food, never exercises, and is powered almost exclusively by rage, will be three years into his second stint at the hardest, most important job in the world.
This is bleak, particularly since Trump is already so crass, seemingly mentally ill, and out of it that it will be hard to delineate between senility and his normal personality.
Trump hasn’t somehow miraculously gotten sane and sharp in the last month or so. It’s time for people to stop acting like he did.
Winning an election didn’t make Trump sharp and sane; he’s just as fuzzy and doddering as before, but now he’ll have even more power than he did during his first term in office when he was, it’s worth noting, THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE WORLD.
May God have mercy on our souls.
