Donald Trump Won January 6th

During his four years in office, Donald Trump was the true Teflon Don, a mercurial, wildly self-destructive figure who was constantly making catastrophic mistakes that called his sanity as well as his competency into question without suffering in the least

Time and time again, pundits insisted that Trump’s latest disaster was going to be the death of him politically, that there was absolutely no way he would ever be able to recover. And time and time again the world instantly forgot and forgave Trump’s sins and transgressions.

Trump didn’t even have to apologize to be forgiven. In fact he almost never apologized, with the exception of the “grab em by the pussy” tape. Even that “apology” was mealy-mouthed and half-hearted, self-evidently false and self-serving nonsense that dismissed his words as little more than the kind of “locker room talk” every human being on earth constantly engages in.

January 6th, 2021 was supposed to be different. It was supposed to be the twice-impeached ex-president’s long over-due spiritual, emotional and political reckoning, the fateful day when all of his ugliness would spill out into the open and finally, conclusively reveal him as the power-mad, dangerously delusional, emotionally stunted monster he truly was rather than the patriot he pretended to be.

January 6th was supposed to be a day of judgment. It was supposed to be a day that will live in infamy, a shameful day for American democracy, the Republican Party and Donald Trump.

For a brief window it seemed like the appalling and eminently preventable events of January 6th might be the death of Trump as uncontested leader of the Republican party and 2024 presidential candidate.

The consequences were swift and dramatic, if long-overdue. He was finally kicked off Twitter and Facebook. Top Republicans condemned the madness and the madman who incited it. Trump was temporary toxic, a pariah who brought shame and disgrace on his country, his party and his family name.

Then something very unfortunate and very predictable happened. Lacking any other direction, a broken and amoral GOP that for four agonizing years believed in nothing beyond the rightness, strength and God-like invincibility of Donald Trump reverted quickly back to its old ways.

Out of habit, The Republican Party forgot and forgave Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th kerfuffle and relinquished all power to him.

A new narrative formed that posited January 6th not as a failed insurrection, a national tragedy or nadir for our political process but rather as a simple matter of patriotic, freedom-loving Americans getting a little carried away in their all-consuming passion for electoral integrity.

Trump insisted that the mob was “hugging and kissing the police and the guards” and represented “zero threat.”

The Celebrity Apprentice host implored us not to believe our eyes, ears or brains but instead his ludicrous depiction of the riot.

The insane white-washing of January 6th by the Republican Party culminated in a ridiculous resolution that described the Q Shaman and various other brainwashed extremists as “ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse” who are the innocent victims of “Democrat-led persecution.”

The real monsters, this insane bit of propaganda insists, are Republicans Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for serving on a committee investigating January 6th and consequently being in cahoots with an evil administration intent on “replacing liberty with Socialism.”

Trump may not have won the 2020 election but he clearly won January 6th, a victory that doubles as a crushing loss for our nation, its values and its ideals.
